Zagat Survey has published the 2001 edition of America's Top Restaurants, the national version of the company's famous slim guide books. Based on the ratings and reviews of more than 100,000 restaurant goers, this year's edition includes 1,279 dining spots in 44 major U.S. markets. The news for New Yorkers: Although nine restaurants in the country scored a 29 (the highest score given this year), no New York City restaurant got that score (blame New Yorker's tough standards). But 22 Big Apple restaurants did receive a 27 or 28, and the city had more places rated 27 or above than any other city. One interesting tidbit: 86 percent of surveyors said male diners get better treatment than female patrons, perhaps because men are perceived as bigger spenders and tippers.
