Party Tips from New York Mag

Posted 05.18.01
The current "Summer Entertaining" issue of New York magazine draws on some special event industry players for home entertaining tips. The package begins with a gushing story on caterer Serena Bass ("Serena Bass can make any occasion a party") that takes the reader to a summery party with guests including flower and event designer Antony Todd and Bass' niece, actress Minnie Driver. (Sample tip: Spice up potato salad with juniper berries.)

Well-known event designer Colin Cowie ("What Imelda Marcos is to shoes...I am to table tops") shows three tabletops: an Indian-inspired table with mounds of spices for dinner; woven mats and baskets for a picnic lunch; and a turquoise and lime green table with Granny Smith apples for brunch.

You also get a collection of recipes with exotic spices, eight summer drink concoctions and weekend recipes from Daniel's Daniel Boulud, Craft's Tom Colicchio, Alain Ducasse's Alain Ducasse, Fleur de Sel's Cyril Renaud, Ouest's Tom Valenti and Town's Geoffrey Zakarian. Most odd is a spread of entertaining tips from an assortment of notables including Lotus' Mark Baker, entertaining guru B. Smith and Hedwig and the Angry Inch star John Cameron Mitchell.
