MTV's Big Bashes

MTV's 20th anniversary is sure to be the biggest blowout of the next week, as the network takes over the Hammerstein Ballroom on Wednesday, August 1, for a live broadcast and party for advertisers, staffers and music industry folks (with food from The Catering Company). (The venue has also hosted MTV's holiday staff party in the past.) But it isn't the only bash on the minds of MTV's considerable special events staff. On the night before is a party for the network's founders and early employees at the Park, and the week also includes a party for current staffers in the Lodge, the Viacom cafeteria (which hosted a media panel luncheon last summer).

Next up for MTV will be September's Video Music awards, which will be held in the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center this year, with an after-party at Avery Fisher Hall.

The folks in charge of all of these big deals--and a lot more during the rest of the year--are Kathy Flynn, MTV's vice president of production events (the one the channel shows on TV), and Leslie Leventman, MTV Networks' executive vice president of creative services and special events (the ones put on for marketing purposes). Leventman was recently honored with an award from Rock and Wrap It Up! for her work helping the hunger nonprofit, which picks up food leftover from backstage catering at concerts and special events, and then delivers it to local soup kitchens.
