A large number of somber special event folks crowded into the Steve Wise Free Synagogue on West 68th Street on Friday morning for a memorial service to honor Jay Magazine, the catering sales manager at Windows on the World who was lost when the restaurant's building, the World Trade Center, was destroyed last week. Magazine's wife, children and siblings spoke at the service, and other speakers included Windows' Greg Hein (who recalled Magazine's outgoing, fun personality) and Syd Mandelbaum, the founder of Rock and Wrap It Up, a nonprofit which picks up food leftover from backstage catering at concerts and special events, and then delivers it to local soup kitchens. (Mandelbaum and Magazine were friends, and Windows hosted the nonprofit's benefit in June.)
Magazine's family asked that those wishing to make memorial contributions should donate to one of six organizations, including Rock and Wrap It Up (405 Ocean Point, Cedarhurst, NY 11516) and the Culinary Institute of America (1946 Campus Drive, Hyde Park, NY 12538-1499, Attention: Robert Lane).
Magazine's children, Melissa and Andrew, are also asking people with fond memories of their father to send them a note telling a story about him. A note from them said, "Together we will use these shared memories to learn more about how our father lived his live and how we can use his life as an example for us as we grow and mature." Notes can be sent to: Melissa and Andrew Magazine, 280 Riverside Drive, Apt. 16A, New York, NY 10025.
