Coalition to Bring Events and Meetings to NYC

As New York City's hospitality industry works to recover from the ramifications of the September 11 attacks, many groups have decided to bring meetings to the city. The list includes the World Economic Forum, the United States Congress, the American Society of Association Executives, Meeting Professionals International and many more. And now, under the auspices of the New York City's convention and visitors bureau NYC & Company, a group has formed to continue the momentum for keeping and attracting group business in New York.

The NYC & Company Meeting and Event Coalition was started in October and now includes more than 200 members, including hotels, airlines, restaurants, independent event and meeting planners, DMCs, venues, media, and entertainment and transportation companies. The mission is to book group business in New York City now. The group has been responsible for marketing the city to meeting and event professionals around the world, and it will launch a pro bono media campaign in the major meeting and event media outlets in January.

A database of centralized special deals and offers has been created to appeal to economics as well as emotions in selling New York as a meeting and event location. Offers include everything from special hotel and restaurant rates, waiving Saturday restrictions for airfares, and free Broadway tickets for entire groups. Other offers include having a Broadway star greet a group, playing a basketball game on the Knicks' court or having a group welcomed on a Times Square video billboard. In addition all 200 members of the Coalition have taken the NYCPDQ (NYC Pretty Darn Quick) pledge, in which they promise to respond to any call, proposal or request from a meeting or event planner within 24 hours.

The coalition is co-chaired by BiZBash's David Adler (email: [email protected]) and Millennium's Aldo Marsili. (email: [email protected]). Other members of the executive committee include American Express' Ritu Clementi, Hilton Hotels' Mark Lauer, Ellis Island's Patti Golden, Empire Force's Jaclyn Bernstein, Briggs Red Carpet's Tony Napoli, Manhattan Passports' Ina Lee Selden, NYC & Company's Greg Gibadlo, and Delta Airlines' Mimi McGuire. For more information about booking a meeting or event in New York, call Greg Gibadlo at 212.484.1218 or email him at [email protected].
