Javits' New Expansion Plan

The expansion of the Javits Center will break ground in spring 2005, at the same time as a new stadium for the New York Jets. Empire State Development Corporation chairman Charles Gargano unveiled a two-part plan last week, and estimated that the first phase would cost between $1.5 billion and $1.7 billion, according to Crain's New York Business. The project will take between five and seven years, and will almost double Javits' event space. The center will extend primarily to the north but also one block south, to 33rd Street, Gargano said. The first phase of construction will expand the center to 40th Street, and the second phase will extend to 42nd Street and add a hotel.
