Talk of MSG Move Angers Preservationists

Forty years after Madison Square Garden razed the original Penn Station, the arena may be on the move again. Vornado Realty Trust and the Related Companies are both pitching to move MSG across the street to Ninth Avenue, inside the James Farley Post Office, according to AM-NY’s Monday story. Manhattan preservation groups—who were furious the first time around—are already plotting to prevent the new construction from happening.

Under the proposal, the new MSG would share space with Moynihan Station, a transit hub named after late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, that is slated to function as the new Penn Station and will house the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit. Construction on Moynihan Station—which preservationists support—could begin as early as September, and the city has already committed $154 million to the project. However, preservationists fear that Moynihan Station would be overshadowed by the new MSG, as it is slated to take up 60 percent of the post office and could stand as high as 50 feet above the building. Deputy mayor Dan Doctoroff showed some hesitation about the projects, saying that there are “elements of incompatibility” between the new MSG and Moynihan Station, and that the city is under a time crunch to make a decision.

The real estate proposal also suggests that the old MSG and Penn Station would be knocked down to make way for a $6 billion block of skyscrapers and a new Penn Station.
