Javits Construction on Fast Track

After the Javits Center expansion got final approval from the Public Authorities Control Board last week, on Monday Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Chuck Schumer called for the first and second phases of construction to begin at the same time later this year. Bloomberg said, "Why delay phase two of the project and wait for costs to increase? Now is the time to act and move forward with both phases one and two simultaneously, so that New York City will have a convention center worthy of the world’s greatest city."

Phase one includes the addition of 520,000 square feet of exhibition, meeting, and banquet space. Phase two adds 300,000 square feet of space, plus more meeting space. Both phases will bring the Javits Center's total exhibit space to 1.4 million square feet. Beginning both phases at the same time is projected to have little impact on the completion of phase one, slated for 2010.
