Just as another Fashion Week comes to a close comes word that IMG may have to move its tents for the next go-round. According to Women’s Wear Daily, IMG (which owns 7th on Sixth, the producer of the temporary venue) has not yet reached an agreement with the Bryant Park Restoration Committee to use the park for the February 2007 shows. Park officials have long lamented the spring shows’ move from November to early September, which forces the park to close on Labor Day weekend for tent construction. And the ice skating rink that went up there last winter drew enough sponsorship dollars that the park would like to extend it into February, when the fall shows take place.
The problem for IMG is finding a new home for the shows with both the size and the accessibility that the fashion crowd is used to. And that crowd isn’t feeling good about the prospect of taking their town cars to an out of the way location like the waterfront. (One alternative is Lincoln Center, although it would have 35 percent less space, and the layout plan would likely require a lengthy walk between tents.)
Fashion folks from Anna Wintour to Zac Posen told WWD they’re set on staying in the park, with some citing the fashion industry’s economic impact on the city and the shows’ role in rejuvenating the park as reasons the city and the park should support them. (The story is only available to subscribers on WWD.com.)
