TODAY'S CALENDAR: The TED Conference continues in Long Beach, California

* INCOMING *

1. LESSONS FROM CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: Xerox’s chief marketing officer Christa Carone discusses what lessons marketers can learn from Cirque du Soleil's performance at the Oscars. "While we can't all hold our feet behind our heads or scale a 50-foot wooden pole in five seconds (with no hands) we, as marketers, can embrace the business philosophies of Cirque du Soleil. Its mission statement is a great rallying call: ‘to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses, and evoke the emotions of people around the world.’ As we take yet another first step toward enduring success, I challenge us all to remember that at the end of every business exchange is a person—not unlike one in the front row of a Cirque du Soleil performance—and put a little magic in our real marketing."

2. TED TRYOUTS: As a way to leverage its brand, TED is crowdsourcing speakers for the 2013 installment of its conference. The nonprofit behind the recognized series will host auditions in cities around the world, including New York, Sydney, and Tokyo, with local TEDx organizers producing the events. The 30 best candidates from a pool of online applicants in each location will be invited to speak before a committee and videos from these talks will be put to a popular vote on TED.com.
