* INCOMING *

1. PRODUCERS GRADE V.M.A.S: MTV's biggest award show franchise brought together everyone from Rihanna and Miley Cyrus to Andy Samberg and the U.S. Olympic Fab Five at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday night. We asked some of the country's top event producers to weigh in on their favorite (and least favorite) details of the show. They liked the staging, but questioned the network’s decision to hold the ceremony on the same night as President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention, Fashion’s Night Out, and the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival (what news editor Anna Sekula deemed “event apocalypse”). They gave the overall production a B+. http://bit.ly/RiRv0o

2. FASHION’S NIGHT OUT HIGHLIGHTS: Speaking of the giant retail promotion: We’ll post highlights from several cities later, but in the meantime you can check out the photos we posted to Twitter and Instagram, from the likes of VitaminWater’s pop-up disco in Washington and Henri Bendel’s New York windows with Zumanity performers:

3. POLITICAL TWITTER BACKFIRE: During the course of the Republican and Democratic national conventions, both Obama and Romney campaigns have promoted trending topics. Each trending topic costs upward of $100,000. However, the usage of the hashtags in Twitter chatter has had the opposite effect each party hoped for, so is it worth the price? 4. EMPORIO PLAYLIST: Emporio Armani has partnered with Spotify to score better music at its events. WWD: “[I]t became the first fashion brand to partner with Spotify, the digital music service that gives users access to millions of songs. As part of the arrangement, Emporio Armani created an official account and branded playlist at #EmporioArmaniLive. It features 40 songs by 40 artists, including tracks from the Drums, Ladyhawke, and Skylar Grey—the performers at tonight’s party to celebrate the opening of the Madison Avenue flagship.” http://wwd.us/NfwbqQ

5. GOOGLE AND NYFW: Google is making a big appearance at New York Fashion Week by streaming 30 live shows on YouTube and partnering with brands like Teen Vogue and Lucky to host Google Hangouts. Mashable: “Teen Vogue beauty director Eva Chen will be hosting a Google Hangout on startup Lyst’s Google+ page before fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff’s show at Lincoln Center. Between four and five people, all prescreened, will be invited into the hangout to pose questions to backstage makeup and hair artists, as well as Minkoff herself.” http://on.mash.to/P1s4gI

6. C.F.D.A. PARTNERS WITH W HOTELS:
W Hotels and the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced a partnership at the start of New York Fashion Week in which the W will sponsor travel for the C.F.D.A.’s Fashion Incubator program. WWD: "W initially will sponsor travel opportunities for the program participants at its 42 hotels and retreats around the world by providing paid inspirational trips, as well as expanding the designers’ brand awareness to guests at the sites through trunk shows.” http://wwd.us/OsC7Ks

7. ENK INTERNATIONAL SHAKE-UP: Elyse Kroll, chairman and founder of ENK International, is leaving the company. WWD: “Kroll sold a substantial stake in ENK International to private investment firm Forstmann Little & Co. in 2006, which also owns IMG. Kroll remained with the company as chairman.” http://on.mash.to/P0TWBE
