September 3, 2013: Festival Deaths Force Cancellation, Learn the Basics of Cause Marketing, Burning Man Goes Digital

1. ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL CANCELLED FOLLOWING DEATHS: The final day of the Electric Zoo festival in New York City was cancelled following the death of two music fans, likely from drug-related causes. New York Times: "Electric Zoo’s organizers, the promoter Made Event, paid the Randalls Island Park Alliance, the nonprofit group that maintains the publicly owned island, a site fee of $600,000. The organizers provided private security, including 550 licensed security guards, said Stefan Friedman, a spokesman for the organizers. The guards could observe the crowd from raised platforms using binoculars and night vision equipment, he said, adding that all concertgoers were required to pass five checkpoints and submit to a pat-down and a bag search before arriving. But some attendees said they had been asked only to open their bags or were not checked at all." http://nyti.ms/138q9iv

2. LEARN THE BASICS OF CAUSE MARKETING: Companies that want to host events with nonprofit organizations—so-called cause marketing—should consider their target audience and vision before launching the campaign. Business Journals: "When you do conceive and launch your event, make it useful and exciting so the community and your sponsors are happy to be associated with it. Provide as much exposure to your sponsors and community partners as possible. A truly successful event is a win-win for your company, partners and the community, benefiting all involved." http://bit.ly/1755bSn

3. FIRM HELPS GLOBAL TRAVELERS ESCAPE HOT SPOTS: Travelers attending business meetings or events in global hot spots—or those that find themselves in an emergency locally—can get help from a Navy SEAL-led company created after the terrorist attacks of September 11. Boston Globe: "At a time when companies are sending employees to every corner of the globe and adventure travelers are seeking thrills in droves, Global Rescue’s evacuation and medical assistance services are in great demand. The prevalence of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and civil uprisings also means travelers are more likely to find themselves in crisis." http://b.globe.com/19ex4rs

4. BURNING MAN GOES DIGITAL: The desert festival Burning Man used to provide an oasis from technology, but that's changed as more people are posting their experiences to social media. New Your magazine: "Now that the festival has become a glorified corporate retreat, though—with tech C.E.O.s pulling up in luxury RVs and float-building outsourced to TaskRabbits—it's entered the social-media age. Now, with hundreds of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram updates being posted every day from the playa, you can watch people brag about their Burning Man sojourns in real time." http://nym.ag/15AbZUm
