November 25, 2013: New Jersey Battles New York for Super Bowl Events, Seattle Gives OK to Pot Party, EDM Events Face Competition

1. FOR SUPER BOWL EVENTS, IT’S NEW YORK VS. NEW JERSEY: While this season’s Super Bowl will be played in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, most observers acknowledge the real excitement will be across the river in New York. New York Times: “For the Super Bowl, New Jersey desperately craves attention. It dreams of the dollars that Super Bowl fans will spend. It dreams of not having to manufacture the appeal that comes naturally to New York, where there will be velvet ropes, party after party and mile-long guest lists. New Jersey dreams of the respect it never seems to get. So towns near the $1.6 billion stadium, the home of the New York Giants and the New York Jets, are scheduling their own celebrations, though maybe not with boldface names and V.I.P. receptions or the official imprimatur of the National Football League.” http://nyti.ms/18Be3S0

2. SEATTLE GIVES OK TO POT PARTY: A marijuana activist will host an all-day pot party next month to mark the first anniversary of the drug’s legalization in Washington. Seattle Times: “It’s a free, adults-only event, open to the public, at which Livingston plans to have light music, light catering and outdoor pot smoking by up to 500 people behind a double fence, or smoking ‘moat,’ as the permit says. But it wasn’t easy to accomplish. Livingston said Seattle Center officials initially rejected the idea because marijuana remains federally illegal. It took three months, he said, of arguing and pressing his case before city officials came around.” http://bit.ly/1bJOQlJ

3. EDM EVENTS FACE COMPETITION: Coachella producer Goldenvoice is moving into the electric dance music arena with a new partnership with San Diego-based promoter LED. Billboard: “The partnership will also enable LED to challenge current Cali leader Insomniac Events—which promotes club nights as well as its marquis Las Vegas festival Electric Daisy Carnival—and its parent company Live Nation.” http://bit.ly/1b04SHg
