1. LIVE NATION PICKS UP GOVERNORS BALL: Live events giant Live Nation Entertainment has added New York’s Governors Ball to its lineup of major music festivals, which also includes Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. The company recently completed a deal to acquire a majority stake in the festival’s parent organization, Founders Entertainment. It will promote the festival, which takes place June 3-5 at Randall's Island. The New York Times: “The deal for Governors Ball follows a pattern for Live Nation, which in recent years has taken controlling stakes in a series of independent promoters around the country. In 2013, it bought half of Insomniac, the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival. In 2014, Live Nation made a deal with C3 Presents, which has Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits; last year, it acquired Bonnaroo. … In New York, various companies—including Live Nation and A.E.G.—have tried and failed to establish festivals over the years, but among multiday pop festivals drawing a broad audience, only Governors Ball has had staying power, with 150,000 in attendance last year over three days.” http://nyti.ms/1Wna2sR
2. TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAMMING MORE DIVERSE THAN EVER: Along with 102 film screenings, this year's Tribeca Film Festival will have expanded programming that includes 16 TV-related events and 38 virtual reality experiences. The 15th annual festival, which takes place April 13-24, will also showcase how emerging technologies such as Snapchat can be used as storytelling platforms. The Wall Street Journal: “‘As a young festival we really feel like we have the good fortune to be in a position where we can change a little bit more easily, evolve a little bit more easily, than other festivals,’ said festival Director Genna Terranova. … The festival’s foray into different forms reflects the myriad ways that its featured directors this year have found their way to film. ‘Something you’ll see across the program is people coming from different media into film or from film into other media—maybe television, maybe online,’ said senior programmer Cara Cusumano.” http://on.wsj.com/22ohMu2
3. ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE STEVE MILLER CRITICIZES CEREMONY: Steve Miller didn’t hold back with his opinions about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at this year’s induction ceremony, which took place Friday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. After the guitarist and singer-songwriter gave his acceptance speech—in which he mentioned the foundation's questionable nomination process and lack of female inductees—he voiced more thoughts backstage. USA Today: “Speaking in the press room after his induction, Miller, 72, insisted, ‘The whole process needs to be changed ... It doesn't need to be this hard. There's nothing fancy going on out there that requires all of this stuff.’ Miller complained about access to the event. ‘When they told me I was inducted they said 'You have two tickets, one for your wife and one for yourself.' ... What about my band? What about their wives?’’” http://usat.ly/1qEoC3h
