1. 'MEET THE PRESS' TO LAUNCH NEW FILM FESTIVAL WITH A.F.I.: NBC’s Meet the Press has partnered with the American Film Institute to launch a new documentary film festival in Washington. Series host Chuck Todd announced the new event on Tuesday. Variety: “The venerable Sunday public-affairs mainstay is joining forces with the American Film Institute for a film festival to be held in November in Washington D.C. Submissions for what is expected to be a slate of seven short-length documentary films are now being accepted. It’s a surprising extension of a TV mainstay that is in the midst of its 70th year on the air. He’s not trying to compete with places like Vice Media or CNN, both of which have gained notice in recent years for documentaries. Instead, he’s vying with the shifting attention span of a rising generation of viewers, whose desire for on-demand video renders obsolete the concept of so-called appointment television. … The ‘Meet the Press’ film festival will feature contemporary documentaries of 40 minutes in length or less that focus on untold stories of American politics. Films selected for the festival will be eligible for up to $5,000 in finishing support from NBC News for post-production costs, including licensing of third‐party material, and are likely to get some sort of nod during ‘Meet the Press’ on Sundays or during the week on MSNBC.” http://bit.ly/2uYjjPm
2. 'VOGUE' ANNOUNCES NEW FASHION INDUSTRY CONFERENCE: Vogue has partnered with American Airlines, Milk, and HP to launch Forces of Fashion, a new conference that will take place in New York in October. Vogue: "The one-day event is the first of its kind and will feature a series of intimate and informative dialogues between designers and the editors of Vogue. 'When it came to our 125th anniversary, designers had to be part of the celebration; who they are, and what they do, is so much part of Vogue. Yet we wanted to do something that is different, and which speaks to the world today; the collective desire for experience and connection,' says Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour. 'Forces of Fashion will bring together some of our favorite names, and allow them the opportunity to speak in a way they’ve never done before; live and direct with Vogue’s editors on a day that we believe will be as informative as it is intimate. You’ll need to be there to really experience it!' The current lineup features 10 editor-designer talks: Fashion Director Tonne Goodman and Stella McCartney on the future of ethical fashion, International Editor at Large Hamish Bowles and Dries Van Noten on the power of independent design, and more. These will be no-holds-barred and nothing-is-off-the-table conversations; everything about what it means to be designing and working in 2017 is, and will be, up for discussion." http://bit.ly/2hoQsAE
3. HOW TOMORROWLAND MUSIC FEST IS ATTRACTING YOUNGER CROWDS WITH LUXURY EXPERIENCES: More music festivals, including Tomorrowland in Belgium, are attracting younger crowds by offering premium and luxury experiences along with its headlining acts. CNBC: “Tomorrowland's popularity has exploded since it launched in 2005 with attendance topping 400,000 this year. The event is among a growing number of live music festivals catering to a younger generation with add-on experiences that extend far beyond the headline performers. ‘It's beyond a festival,’ world-famous DJ Armin van Buuren told CNBC. ‘It's a music festival combined with a theme park combined with a food festival combined with a cultural event.’ Music festivals like Tomorrowland are increasingly looking to millennials choosing to spend their extra cash on experiences instead of goods. Passes to the three-day festival, which spans over two weekends in July, cost roughly $260 in pre-sale and sell out in minutes. Guests lucky enough to get tickets to Tomorrowland can pay to stay in DreamVille, a themed village on the festival grounds. Sleeping arrangements range from a regular tent to a private cabana with a sauna and 24-hour reception for more than $2000 for the weekend. DreamVille also features its own bakery, laundry bar, hair salon and workout facility. The luxury accommodations mark a notable shift from the hippie counterculture of Woodstock nearly 50 years ago. Tomorrowland features 16 stages and more than 1,000 artists.” http://cnb.cx/2vtIFYq
