To promote South African tourism, celebrations for the first South Africa Day in New York took to the streets and parks of the city. The day began with a roaming city safari of animal-costumed performers in vehicles donated by Land Rover and decorated in animal prints by artist and designer Norval Johnson. After commencing the day's activities with a media appearance at Chelsea Piers, both South Street Seaport and Bryant Park were the setting for performances by Washington, D.C.-based Step Afrika! The day culminated with a performance at Central Park Summerstage by South African songstress Miriam Makeba.
