Like many New York parties, this one featured a parade of bitchy one-liners. The difference was that this time, most of the bon mots were on stage, during a reading of Clare Boothe Luce's catty classic, The Women. A benefit for The Actors' Fund of America's Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative, the reading starred Bebe Neuwirth, Elaine Stritch and Karen Ziemba.
Before the catfight began at the Lucille Lortel Theater, the Off Broadway theater on Christopher Street, some ticket holders and members of the cast attended a cocktail party down the street at Goodfellas Trattoria and Pizzeria, an Italian restaurant that also donated food and drinks to the party. In addition to many of the actresses participating in the reading--including Polly Bergen, Lea DeLaria and Rita Moreno--we also spotted legendary Broadway lyricist Adolph Green and party photographer Patrick McMullan.
The Observer's Rex Reed and Jerry Seinfeld and his very pregnant wife, Jessica Sklar, skipped the party, but slipped through a crowd of photographers and autograph seekers to watch the reading.
