Antonio "LA" Reid, the president of Arista Records, embraced the New York City Public Schools by sponsoring the Soundtrack for Learning benefit for Public Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning (PENCIL). PENCIL, the nonprofit that organizes the annual Principal for a Day program in New York City, also incubated VH-1's Save the Music program.
The Hammerstein Ballroom was packed with a new generation of concerned New Yorkers, including Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica Sklar, who ventured out for the first time since the birth of their daughter. The Arista and BMG communications teams were out in full force to support Reid and Strauss Zelnick, the president of BMG and a major sponsor of the event. PENCIL chairwoman Lisa Belzberg thanked PENCIL's supporters and encouraged their continued involvement in the New York City Public Schools.
The night's entertainment included some big names from Arista and BMG's talent roster. At one point in the evening, soprano saxophonist Kenny G strolled through the crowd playing one note on his horn while shaking hands with audience members. R & B sensation Babyface dazzled the audience later in the evening with his own performance.
