The Sky Box Is Still the Limit

January 31, 2001
The Super Bowl is over, the Final Four is coming fast, and sports are on everyone's minds. That makes it a good time to look at some of the most popular places to entertain clients: sports arenas. And the best places in those venues are the sky boxes, the lux corporate hangouts where big spenders take clients and valued employees. Even in our changing economy, these pricey boxes are still hot--and booked. The big boys have them, and they don't seem to be leaving any time soon.

So here's our report on what sky boxes cost in six New York area venues, and how you can use them, too. While getting a yearly contract is pretty tough, the arenas also keep boxes open for one-time events. Here's the lowdown:

Madison Square Garden
Price: $450,000 and up per year, with a three-year minimum.
What that gets you: Admission to everything--including games and concerts--held at the Garden, except private events. But catering costs extra.
Who has them: Major players in the entertainment, telecommunications, legal and financial industries.
Availability: Of MSG's 89 boxes, 88 are leased on a yearly basis, and one is available on an event-by-event basis. The cost of this box varies by event.
The scoop: Home of the most expensive and the toughest boxes to get into, MSG hasn't had an open box in more than eight years.

Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands
Price: $130,000 to $360,000 per year, depending on location, with a three-year minimum.
What that gets you: Admission to all NFL games and first right to purchase tickets to major league soccer games, XFL football games or other events.
Who has them: Major players in the financial, insurance, banking, pharmaceutical, legal and accounting industries.
Availability: Of its 118 suites, 116 are leased on a yearly basis, while two are available on an event-by-event basis. These suites are $7,500 for regular season NFL games and $12,500 for Monday night or playoff games.
The scoop: The six best--and most expensive--suites at Giants Stadium are located between the 30-yard lines on the mezzanine level.

Yankee Stadium
Price: $280,000 a year for a Luxury Suite or $425,000 a year for a Hall of Fame Suite, with a two-year minimum.
What that gets you: Admission to all Yankees games and first right to purchase tickets to any other event. Catering is not included.
Who has them: Fortune 500 companies and others in the financial, food and manufacturing industries.
Availability: Of Yankee Stadium's 19 Luxury Suites, 18 are leased on a yearly basis and one is available on an event-by-event basis for $2,600 to $4,500. About half of the 15 Hall of Fame Suites are leased on a yearly basis; the rest are sold on an individual event basis for $6,500 a pop.
The scoop: Hall of Fame Suites are more desirable because they are located at a higher level and can accommodate more people (as many as 40 compared with a Luxury Suite's 20- to 30-person capacity).
