Mark Musters' Decor for Hannibal Party

February 13, 2001
All the coverage of the Hannibal premiere may have told you how gruesome the movie is, but it didn't tell you about Mark Musters' gorgeously eerie decor at the after-party. His firm, Musters & Company, filled the New York Public Library's Astor Hall with bold, dramatic red tones and a low-lying fog, creating an edgy ambiance. Upon entering the library, guests encountered performance artists dressed as statues, which reflected the film's dramatic opera scene and added to the eerie feeling of the event.
Musters' decor also included blood-red silk and damask cloths for the buffet tables (which were topped with food from Sonnier & Castle) and 25-foot, custom-made red velvet drapes. He also created lounge areas with red couches for guests including the film's stars, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore.

Adam Keen, MGM's director of special events, told us the studio chose to have the party in Astor Hall and its second floor balcony to reflect the grandeur of Florence, the setting for part of the film. The library's grandeur comes at some cost: The library's standard rates are $15,000 for Astor Hall, plus $5,000 more for the second floor balcony that overlooks the hall. But that's chump change compared to the $58 million Hannibal reportedly brought in during its opening weekend.
