A Candy-Colored Mardi Gras Party

February 26, 2001
Making the best of a night plagued by a snowstorm, the Cancer Research & Treatment (CRT) Fund, an organization which funds research on cancer and other blood-related diseases, hosted a Mardi Gras-themed benefit in the Grand Ballroom of the Puck Building.
Robert Williams of the Creative Production Resources Group donated his time to light the stark white room with candy-colored hues of magenta, yellow, green and blue. (The lights were rented from Big Apple Lights.) The otherwise spartan decor included an lots of balloons strewn across the ceiling in the traditional Mardi Gras colors--green, gold and purple--and tables offered up party favors including masks, metallic coins, beads and bracelets. The props came from a variety of sources; due to a botched order from a Mardi Gras party supplier in Louisiana, at the last minute the party's organizers had to run around Manhattan getting together enough props for the evening.

The food for the 250 young professionals who attended the event was donated by several restaurants, including Osteria Del Circo, the Manhattan Grille, the Victory Cafe, La Belle Epoque, Merchants NY and La Mela Ristorante. Liquor was donated by Doherty's Pub, Turtle Bay Grille & Lounge and Clancy's; champagne was donated by Christine Earthy and beer was from the Brooklyn Brewery. Dance music was provided by the Jim Roberti Band, DJ Liquid Todd (booked through Evolution Talent), DJ Angola and DJ Jon Greggory.

The evening's guest of honor was Dr. Richard Silver, medical director of the CRT and principle investigator in New York City for testing of a new anti-leukemia pill. Despite the bad weather, the evening raised more than $20,000 for the fund.
