The circus is back in town, and to celebrate, the Big Apple Circus held its opening night gala under its big tent in Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park. While swankily dressed opera patrons made their way to the opera houses, kids and kids-at-heart filed into the tents to enjoy a fun, 50's-themed bash, complete with caterwaiters dressed as soda jerks, women in poodle skirts, soda for the kids, beer and wine for the adults, and tons of cotton candy and popcorn.
For decor, Tess Casey of Aisling Flowers brought in huge, colorful balloon arches and multitudes of bright flashing lights to grace the walkway to the tent. Inside, caterwaiters from Canard Inc. passed mini-hamburgers and pizzette hors d'oeuvres to supplement box dinners. The waiters were notably friendly and enthusiastic, especially good with so many kids around. Guests took the box dinners into the big top, where the company's current production "Big Top Doo-Wop" delighted the audience with clowns, acrobats, horses and a hilarious family of stunt dogs.
Organized by the development office at the Big Apple Circus, the nonprofit's event also honored Richard Parsons, co-chief operating officer at AOL Time Warner, who was presented with a fun circus-themed award designed by RB Kinetic Toys.
