Despite some ongoing construction work for various ground-floor retailers, last night The New York Times celebrated the official opening of its new Renzo Piano-designed headquarters. And within the airy, glass and steel building is the TimesCenter, which has been hosting events since it opened in mid-September.
Done up in bold shades of red and marigold yellow, with white oak flooring throughout, the modern venue offers multiple areas for events, including a 378-seat auditorium. The cherrywood-paneled auditorium—also known as the Stage—overlooks the building's glass-walled moss and birch garden and has an expandable, blond walnut wood stage; fully extended, the platform is 65 feet by 25 feet, which reduces the number of seats to 300. A blackout or translucent screen for the rear-stage wall is available, as are projection, lighting, and audio equipment. In addition, this area is wired for live television and radio broadcast, and a greenroom and production office are on the same floor.Beneath the auditorium is the Hall, a 4,958-square-foot room that seats 400 or holds 700 for receptions and can be used in conjunction with the adjacent hallway area.
The TimesCenter is wheelchair-accessible, has a catering prep area, and offers freight elevator access to all levels.
