Versace Debuts New Collection With Three Mini Fashion Shows and Concerts—at One Event

Donatella Versace launched her latest Versus Versace collection with a multipart event in New York that included a set that showed the backstage, performances by rapper Angel Haze, Dead Sara, and Grimes, and even a bag-covered pedicab.

With New York as her world stage, Donatella Versace debuted her newest Versus Versace collection, designed in a one-off collaboration with J.W. Anderson, with a stimulating bash for 1,300 guests that was a well-choreographed three-ring circus of sensory experiences with opposing stages creating an immersive effect for a trio of performers and fashion shows.

Heidi Klum, Jaime King, Darren Criss, Theophilus London, Hayden Panettiere, Sky Ferreira, and even Lady Gaga—who watched from a perch on the mezzanine—were just a handful of the celebrities at the 69th Regiment Armory on May 15. The highly anticipated event was produced by KCD under the direction of principal and president Julie Mannion, vice president of production Campbell Bromberg, and the senior team, along with creative consultants David Bradshaw and Marla Weinhoff.

"They wanted this idea of an event where content was king, where there was something happening all the time," said Mannion. "Attendees were bombarded with stimulus—a reflection of what young people want to see these days." Versace and KCD initiated talks last September and planning was in full swing by November. The actual build started Sunday before the Wednesday-night affair and tear down was completed the next night.

Guests aside, helping to fill the 35,000 square feet of space was one rather conspicuous backstage, the centerpiece of the event and what will serve as a unifying element for all subsequent global unveilings. "The simulation here lies in seeing from the inside out and what's happening in live time," said Mannion.

Alluding to the event's dark aesthetic, Mannion noted that the genesis came from Mark Leckey's 1999 "Fiorruchi Made Me Hardcore" video. "It served as the inspiration video for the lighting, the feel, the vibe—and it did have a bit of that rave feel to it," she said. "The night was not meant to feel like typical Versace glamour; this was meant to have an undone energy."

Opposing stages not only helped fill the space, but also eliminated the need for downtime to change performance stages. "Donatella wanted the room to always feel live and never be static—the idea that there's action over here and there," said Mannion. Choreography was also taken into account, with models in one set walking directly outward and onto the stage while, in another, models walked around the inner periphery of the box.

"There were many moving parts that had to be perfectly timed to the minute," said Mannion. "Most people did not see the entire city we practically had backstage, where assets were captured at every aspect of this event." Indeed, behind the scenes there was a portrait room, a screening room for all the talent and models, and a backstage interview area—all of which was being simultaneously captured by creative agency Spring Studios to use the event itself as a vehicle. The resulting ping-pong effect was stimulation everywhere.

Following the shows and performances, DJ Maxwell kept the crowd dancing well into the night. As party favors, guests were given takeout bags of doughnut holes.

In between each performance, 17 models came out from behind the visible backstage in a choreographed walk that had them parade along both the left and right stages. There, they posed for guests before returning for their next look.

Once up the Armory's initial flight of steps, V.I.P.s and celebrities entered into a photo pit area where New York City-based street artist Jordan Seiler had created an original tape art step-and-repeat. After an extensive venue search throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, KCD principal and president Julie Mannion and her team went with the Armory because of its size, height, and range options. 'It's a big open palette,' said Mannion.

Creative consultant Maria Weinhoff, who collaborated with Donatella Versace and KCD on set design, commissioned 26,340 feet of Versus logo tape to wrap the stages, sound equipment, bars, and cocktail furniture. 'We used a lo-fi methodology that was more utilitarian than fancy,' said Mannion. 'There wasn't anything precious; the idea was about this raw vibe.'

Throughout the general seating area as well as the V.I.P. stage, which was raised eight inches off the ground, the 74 tables and benches were covered with custom hand-stenciled cushions, a decorative throwback to the Versus aesthetic. Guests were also given gold lion's head safety pins and rubber bracelets as a souvenir from the night.

Complementing the three mini fashion shows and concerts, a pedicab sporting a rotating carousel of rainbow-colored Venus Versace bags made its way throughout the cavernous venue, offering guests the chance to hop on the back for a ride.

In keeping with Donatella Versace's request for decor that felt a bit undone and raw, KCD and Weinhoff chose staging furniture and props that were intentionally old-fashioned, including vintage monitors. 'The idea was to create an old-school, unplugged feeling,' said Mannion.

The 44- by 40-foot visible backstage, made entirely of smoked Plexiglas panels, served as the core element of the event and was what the entire unveil was designed around, according to Mannion. The transparency allowed the collections to be revealed 'in moment' to guests as they came to life. 'It's the concept of a two-way mirror that became reflective when unlit yet allowed us to film through it when lit,' said Mannion. 'We couldn't physically use a two-way mirror, so this was the best way to affect that.'

Rapper Angel Haze joined Dead Sara and Grimes in performing three songs each throughout the event, each one of their concerts timed to the debut of one-third of the Versus Versace collection. Stages, with DJ booths wrapped in Versus tape, were erected on opposite sides of the venue to eliminate any static and to keep the energy live and free-flowing.

Against large projection screens measuring 33 by 19 feet and 29 by 16 feet that flanked the visible backstage played pretaped Versus inspiration videos as guests initially arrived. During the performances, the screens stimulated guests with a video loop of psychedelic black-and-white imagery in motion.
