September 4, 2015: Visiting Saudi King Gets Gilded Renovation at Four Seasons, What it Takes for Music Festival Producers to Evacuate for Bad Weather, “Aftermovies” a Critical Part of EDM Festival Marketing

1. VISITING SAUDI KING GETS GILDED RENOVATION AT FOUR SEASONS: For King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia’s stay in Washington, his entourage has bought out the Four Seasons hotel and is redecorating with gilded furniture and red carpets. Politico: “‘Everything is gold,’ says one Four Seasons regular, who spied the deliveries arriving at the hotel. ‘Gold mirrors, gold end tables, gold lamps, even gold hat racks.’ Red carpets have been laid down in hallways and even in the lower parking garage, so the king and his family never have to touch asphalt when departing their custom Mercedes caravan.” http://politi.co/1JC90Q7

2. WHAT IT TAKES FOR MUSIC FESTIVAL PRODUCERS TO DECIDE EVACUATE FOR BAD WEATHER: Lightning, high wind, and other weather-related issues are the enemy of summer music festivals. Jay Sweet, producer of the Newport Folk Festival, talks about becoming an “amateur meteorologist” and the issues that go along with making the decision to evacuate festival grounds because of weather. A.V. Club: “As a producer, one definition of my job is that I try to control the entire environment that I’m creating for a paying customer. The biggest thing that is 100 percent out of my control is the one thing that could stop the festival. … I know some people who really flirt with safety. There are other events that I know feel more comfortable flirting with the 'show-must-go-on' mentality. But at the end of the day, it’s different when you’re the oldest festival, the grandaddy of all American music festivals.” http://avc.lu/1NPjJNm

3. “AFTERMOVIES” A CRITICAL PART OF EDM FESTIVAL MARKETING: To create buzz for the major EDM festivals such as Electric Zoo, TomorrowWorld, and Ultra, a new category of film called “aftermovies,” big-budget, professionally produced videos that show off the action, have become an industry standard. Billboard: “As video has become more integral to festival marketing, the movies have become more sophisticated. Ultra Miami's 2014 aftermovie, ‘United We Dance,’ was shot in 4K (four times HD) and had an original score by the DJ duo Vicetone. And Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella has an in-house video content team of 10 staffers who produce trailers, aftermovies and announcement videos for the company's festivals. Most of the videos cost under $100,000 to make, depending on the festival, but for this year's Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, he upped the ante and invested about $4 million in feature-length film called ‘Under The Electric Sky.’” http://bit.ly/1INfz0D
