August 1, 2017: Los Angeles to Host 2028 Olympics, How Venues Are Enhancing Concert Security, Roger Goodell Weighs Washington-Baltimore Super Bowl Bid

1. LOS ANGELES TO HOST 2028 OLYMPICS: Los Angeles has reached a deal to host the 2028 Summer Olympics. Paris will host the 2024 Games. ESPN: “Both Games will be officially awarded at the 130th IOC session in Lima, Peru, on Sept. 13. Los Angeles City Council president Herb Wesson's office on Monday confirmed the deal has been reached. Spokeswoman Caolinn Mejza said the pact is expected to be reviewed by the council later this week. The path to an unprecedented double award was paved last month in Switzerland, where the IOC membership unanimously approved the executive board's recommendation to give the 2024 and 2028 Games to the two candidate cities remaining, Paris and Los Angeles. After that vote, Garcetti and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo joined hands on the stage in celebration. For the past three weeks, leaders from both bids and the IOC have negotiated the terms of a dual-bid allocation. Paris leaders have long said they could host in 2024 because the land where they plan to build the Olympic Village would be available for those Games only. Los Angeles officials publicly stated a preference for 2024 but expressed a willingness to host in 2028 if the IOC made the risk that comes with waiting four more years worthwhile.” http://es.pn/2vm0XuQ

2. HOW VENUES ARE ENHANCING CONCERT SECURITY: In the wake of terror attacks on events like the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, a group of 300 concert-industry veterans recently discussed new inventions to keep venues safe at a conference led by Bill Bratton, former New York police commissioner and executive chairman of venue security organization Prevent Advisors. Inventions include vapor-sniffing dogs, anti-drone technology, and smartphone body cameras. Rolling Stone: “Bon Jovi are just one band that requests ‘Vapor Wake’ dogs at concerts. While normal police dogs are trained to screen concertgoers one by one, Vapor Wake dogs can screen hundreds of people at a time. They are trained to recognize the microscopic ‘thermal plumes’ emitted by a person carrying an explosive. The dogs, mostly Labradors, are bred in labs at Auburn University, trained for 15 months and often socialized in prisons. … At a U2 concert in June at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, 40 officers wore smartphones containing a live-video app that can zoom in on suspects. ‘If there was an active shooter, [the operations room] could turn on all the live streams at once,’ says Alexander Popof, chief operating officer of a Silicon Valley firm that manufactures the technology. 3. ROGER GOODELL WEIGHS WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE SUPER BOWL BID: N.F.L. Commissioner Roger Goodell recently brought up the possibility of Baltimore and Washington hosting a future Super Bowl at a fan forum. Washington Post: “‘The Super Bowl decision is made, and as the event gets bigger and bigger, it gets harder and harder to host because it’s competitive, the infrastructure keeps growing,’ Goodell said at the Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium. ‘The number of hotel rooms now, I think we’re well over 35,000 hotel rooms that are required. The facilities around that for all the different events that come into a Super Bowl have become more complicated. The bar gets raised every year.’ Goodell went on to say that someone recently mentioned to him a possible joint Super Bowl bid in the Baltimore-Washington area. … It’s unclear how a potential Baltimore-Washington joint bid would work, but Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has expressed his desire to host a Super Bowl for years. Jim Collins, a longtime executive with Hilton Hotels who held several leadership positions within the meeting industry, passed away on July 27 in Dallas at age 92. Among other roles, Collins was a chairman of the Convention Liaison Council (now the Convention Industry Council), a member of the P.C.M.A. Board of Directors, and chairman of International Marketing Plan Development Committee, which developed the first long-term marketing plan for the U.S. Travel and Tourism Administration.

CHICAGO:  Chef Gabriele Bonci has announced the first U.S. location of his famed Rome pizzeria, Bonci Pizzarium. Located in the West Loop, the restaurant is slated to open in mid-August. 

LAS VEGAS:  Wynn Las Vegas’s Race & Sports Book is unveiling its renovated space today. The venue now has a 137-foot LED video wall, a casino-level bar that seats 22 guests, and 49 general seats and 40 V.I.P. seats that offer private elevated areas with sofas and tables.

The city’s second annual Le Dîner en Blanc will take place October 8 at the Park Vegas.

LOS ANGELES:  The third annual California Hot Sauce Expo will take place August 19-20 at City National Grove of Anaheim. The event will offer hot sauce from 40 hot-sauce makers from around the world, and include events such as a pepper-eating contest and an infused cocktail competition.
