Bar Baudelaire opened in Old Town Alexandria in mid-June, as the second floor extension of the French restaurant Le Gaulois. Named after the French poet Charles Baudelaire, who wrote a body of work on drinking, the wine bar mixes exposed brick with dark walnut wood and a beamed ceiling (reminiscent of of a wine cellar).
The black granite bar offers 16 seats, with 64 seats at tables next to the bar and in the dining room. The space is separated by a partition of custom-built shelves, which showcase the predominately French wine selection (about 60 percent of what's on offer). Some 30 wines are available by the glass, including a 2004 chenin blanc from Domaine Baumard and a 2003 merlot-cabernet franc from Château Leydet-Valentin.The bar offers small plates, such as sauteed shrimp over hummus and house-cured duck over poached pears and green olives, and is available for full buyouts.
