Presented by Clos du Bois wines in association with PatrĂłn, the Lanson Champagne Winterfest Black Tie Ball welcomed more than 800 sponsors and community members to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on December 8. Event coordinator Dawn Reed turned to Sixth Star Entertainment & Marketing to create the Hollywood-inspired affair.
"We wanted to channel both old and new Hollywood, but keep a music focus by incorporating unique entertainment with Hollywood-meets-Vegas over-the-top costuming," said Doug Jones, president of Sixth Star.As guests walked the yellow-brick-road entryway, they were greeted by 1940's-esque paparazzi-think L.A. Confidential-and a 10-foot Oscar statuette replica. The welcome reception was held in a tent adjacent to the hotel ballroom. Inside the tent, Sixth Star created four movie vignettes, complete with interactive characters, which served as silent-auction stations. In one vignette, items including vacation packages and cruises were displayed around a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired pirate ship, and costumed pirates enticed guests to place a bid. Other vignettes included an Apollo 13 spacecraft, a nautical lighthouse inspired by Popeye, and Cinderella's carriage.
Additional cocktail-party highlights included an interactive sorcerer head from Wise Guys and a foam-crafted Hollywood sign spanning 50 feet atop a grassy knoll.
Inside the ballroom, 10-foot canvas paintings of Hollywood icons such as Charlie Chaplin and Clint Eastwood lined the walls. On each table, Designs by Sean created three different centerpieces incorporating tripods, film reels, and white and red flowers. The hotel created the menu of seared filet mignon with porcini and truffle veal reduction accompanied by pancetta-wrapped shrimp, pureed sunchokes and broccoli rabe, and an Oscar-inspired chocolate cheesecake with a raspberry red carpet sauce, among other desserts.
During dinner, the live auction, presented by Wachovia, featured items including a V.I.P. wine tour of the Napa Valley, a 2008 Lexus IS 250, and a corporate teambuilding event for 200 at Xtreme Indoor Karting, with all proceeds benefiting Winterfest Inc.
The parade, which drew in more than 900,000 spectators, took place the following week on December 15. The fleet of 94 boats traveled east up Fort Lauderdale's Intracoastal Waterway, each representing a different magical movie moment.
