Earth Day Canada Gala Gets Country Fair Theme

Carla Warrilow
June 13, 2011
Earth Day Canada's annual Earth Day gala, a fund-raiser that supports the organization's environmental programs and activities, took over the Drake Hotel on Wednesday evening. With comedy, food stations, and a ceremony to present the "Outstanding Commitment to the Environment and Hometown Heroes" awards, the event had a country-fair theme. Keith Treffy, director of communications for Earth Day Canada, helped oversee the planning process.

A hay-strewn carpet of green grass, complete with a white picket fence, paved the entrance. Inside, servers wore checkered shirts and jeans, and a concessions stand offered old-fashioned fairground treats like Tootsie Rolls and caramel corn. Savory snacks included farm-fresh fare from chefs Michael Stadtländer and  Anthony Rose, who whipped up hors d'oeuvres that incorporated local ham, sausage, asparagus, and sturgeon.

The Drake has hosted the Earth Day Gala for the past four years, and the event is the only one to completely take over the hotel. Sponsors got V.I.P. passes that gave them early access to the Sky Yard outdoor lounge and patio, which later opened to all guests. In the adjacent event space Room 222, servers doled out homemade gelato from the Boreal Gelato Company. Downstairs, guests snacked on organic food at several stations, and band the Sadies entertained. In the venue's lower-level Underground lounge, comedians Mark McKinney and Seán Cullen presided over the award ceremony.

The event drew around 500 guests. “There’s a broad spectrum of decision makers here [at the gala],” said Jed Goldberg, president of Earth Day Canada. “It’s a chance for them to appreciate our work and also see what needs to get done.” The final take is still being tabulated, but planners expect the gala to have netted $100,000.

Cascades was the presenting sponsor, offering a range of environmentally friendly products in the washrooms. Other sponsors included Mill Street Brewery, Aeroplan, AGF Management, and Suncor Energy.

While officially buying the building before the gala was always the goal, event planner Sam Palmer was careful to ensure the gathering would be successful even if the timing didn’t work out. “We had a million different plans, because quite frankly, a million details needed to go right for that to happen,' he said. 'Our leadership and board worked very, very hard to get us across the finish line, and it was a beautiful moment.”
