Oscars 2020: Steal-Worthy Event Design Ideas From the Week's Most Stylish Parties

See how Vanity Fair, Warner Bros., Elton John, ABC, and more celebrated the 92nd Academy Awards.

92nd Annual Academy AwardsThe stage design for the Oscars telecast featured 40,000 Swarovski crystals. Swarovski worked with Emmy-winning creative director Jason Sherwood on the set, which included a 1,100-pound swirl made of crystals, plus a 600-pound crystal curtain and a 1,325-pound crystal tower. "My production design is a sculptural cyclone where Hollywood glamour and film-making artistry can combine visually to celebrate the impact of storytelling, and our partnership with Swarovski has allowed that vision to shine at every turn," Sherwood said in a press release. "Crystals imbue the design with the floating, magical sense of possibility, and bring an almost kaleidoscope wonder to a stage and a year of movies that celebrate the human experience.”Photo: Valerie Durant/A.M.P.A.S.LOS ANGELES—Sunday's 92nd annual Academy Awards were filled with highs and lows, culminating in a surprise win for beloved South Korean film Parasite and its director, Bong Joon-ho. While critics loved certain aspects of the host-less ceremony—including Janelle Monáe’s whimsical entrance, an emotional speech from Brad Pitt, and a moving performance from Cynthia Erivo—other moments felt disjointed, such as a surprise performance from Eminem and multiple presenter introductions for certain categories.

Ultimately, the ceremony—which was produced by Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain for the first time and held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood and Highland—was the least-watched Oscars ever, following the trend of other award shows. Viewership dropped around 20 percent, according to Nielsen's ratings.

But the parties remain as glamorous as ever. Perhaps more than any other award show, the Oscars have their share of ultra-exclusive events that ban all press and social media—most notably Madonna and Guy OSeary's long-running private bash, plus Beyoncé and Jay-Z's gathering at Chateau Marmont. (The latter reportedly had a "dive bar" theme this year, paying homage to the couple's Houston and Brooklyn roots.)

Other hot spots throughout the week were the star-studded Vanity Fair party, the Elton John AIDS Foundation's annual viewing party, and a glamorous gathering from Warner Bros. ABC Television, Mercedes-Benz USA, Essence, and Cadillac also hosted events full of design inspiration; here's a look inside those and other notable gatherings.

Rolex sponsored the Academy Awards' backstage green room for the fifth time, this year designing a sleek space inspired by the theme of “polar exploration,” linked to the brand's eco-conscious Perpetual Planet campaign. The wood-paneled space, produced by Event Eleven, evoked an elegant observation station.

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Governors Ball
The academy’s official after-party, the Governors Ball, took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland immediately following the Oscars on Sunday. This year’s event—which drew 1,500 people—was overseen by Lois Burnwell, a makeup artist and the chair of the academy's awards and events committee, for the third time; she once again worked with Cheryl Cecchetto of Sequoia Productions, who has been producing the Governors Ball for 31 consecutive years.

This year's eye-catching event design was inspired by the concepts of "harmony and relaxation," with a color palette of copper and bronze metallics and accents of eggplant and amethyst. Overhead was a floating chandelier made from 2,000 tubes of light, all constructed from recycled materials in varying finishes and textures. Eighty individual strings of Edison incandescent light bulbs added to the lighting design.

‘Vanity Fair’ Oscars Party
‘Vanity Fair’ Oscars Party
While it’s no longer the night’s most exclusive party (Beyoncé may have taken over that crown), Vanity Fair’s annual Oscars event is still one of the most coveted tickets in town. Once again taking over a custom-built venue between the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts and City Hall, the party was hosted by editor Radhika Jones and drew the likes of Brad Pitt, Billie Eilish, and Kim Kardashian West. The evening started with a 100-guest viewing party and dinner from New York's Frenchette; the party also featured the magazine’s first video portrait studio, a collaboration between Instagram and filmmaker Alvaro Colom.

Longtime collaborator Antony Todd designed the party, using a mix of bold patterns and colors, and Alexander Gilkes served as emcee of a live auction that helped raise more than $6.4 million for AIDS research, treatment, and prevention.

'Essence's 13th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards
'Essence's 13th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards
Essence magazine hosted its 13th annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Thursday afternoon at the Beverly Wilshire. Intended to honor and celebrate Hollywood's most impactful African-American women, this year's honorees were actress and comedian Niecy Nash, director Melina Matsoukas, actress Lashana Lynch, and the cast of FX’s Pose. Show development and production was handled by the Essence events team, led by director of live events and experiential Jovanca Maitland, along with longtime collaborator Agenc.

New this year was an expanded, outdoor red carpet area, which involved extra permitting from the city of Beverly Hills. “This was most exciting because it’s not typical of the city to agree to this, but they did and we had a longer and more robust carpet outside and a bigger platform for our red carpet live stream,” explained Maitland.

The event also celebrated Essence’s 50th anniversary. “The overall inspiration was the 50th anniversary, which is a golden anniversary, so gold was the tone with monochromatic bold pinks and goddess Renaissance,” said Maitland. “[There were] gold and pink tone Swarovski Crystal round pearls on the tables, as this speaks to the classic and timeless side of the brand.”
