Get Inspired By This Music-Driven, Interactive Theatrical Walk-Through

The DiscOasis is a photo op-filled walk-through event featuring music, art installations, roller skating and more—all aiming to reconnect guests to the joy of live experiences.

The third area of the event is the DiscOasis itself, which features a live DJ, a roller-skating rink, a dance floor and other fun activities. “The DJs rotate and mix from a preselected and curated song list from Nile,” noted the team. “This gives the DJs agency to make their performance their own, but ensures that the music lives within the DiscOasis world.”The third area of the event is the DiscOasis itself, which features a live DJ, a roller-skating rink, a dance floor and other fun activities. “The DJs rotate and mix from a preselected and curated song list from Nile,” noted the team. “This gives the DJs agency to make their performance their own, but ensures that the music lives within the DiscOasis world.”Photo: Getty Images for Constellation Immersive

LOS ANGELES—As producers continue experimenting with new, safety-first event formats, one that’s been a welcome addition is the walkthrough experience, which allows guests to fully immerse themselves in an environment while still respecting social distancing. A recent standout example of the format? The appropriately named DiscOasis, a walkthrough theatrical experience that’s billed as a “glittering sonic fantasia for the soul."

Taking over the South Coast Botanic Garden near Los Angeles, the public, ticketed experience, which kicked off July 17 and runs through Labor Day weekend, is a walk through the garden. Along the way, guests explore six different sonic areas, each featuring a different photo op-friendly art installation that’s inspired by a specific disco song, as well as a live actor interacting with guests. The path is all leading to a final area with a disco-inspired roller skating rink, a colorful dance floor, retro arcade games, food trucks and other fun, interactive details.

The event is a collaboration between Los Angeles-based experience studio Constellation Immersive (an affiliate of Creative Artists Agency) and Grammy Award-winning musician Nile Rodgers, who curated the soundtrack as the DiscOasis’ official “groovemaster.”

“After we opened our holiday drive-through experience last year, ‘The Elf on the Shelf’s Magical Holiday Journey,’ we brainstormed ideas for the spring or summer that we could stage outdoors and that we felt would resonate with audiences after a year of living through COVID and lockdowns,” explained Constellation Immersive’s Thao Nguyen and Marty LaSalle. “We decided that music was a universal element that brings people together, and aligned behind a music-inspired outdoor experience.”

Scroll down for a look inside the experience, and to learn more about how the team is pulling off a safe, impactful gathering right now.

The DiscOasis aims to celebrate the idea of music as a universal element that brings people together, according to organizers. When coming up with the concept, Constellation Immersive producers Thao Nguyen and Marty LaSalle said, “We realized almost immediately that it was the right idea for a utopian, joyous, inclusive space that would celebrate everything that disco music is about—but also everything that disco music has inspired.' After their idea took shape, the team reached out to three-time Grammy award-winner Nile Rodgers. “Nile understood the vision immediately and jumped on board to consult with us on the overall experience and curate all the music and sound elements.'

The event takes place at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., with art installations and theatrical experiences placed throughout the space. “After a long location search, we reached an agreement with our friends and partners at the South Coast Botanic Garden to activate a dried-up lake bed that sits at the center of their 87-acre property,” explained Nguyen and LaSalle.

The event, which has timed reservations, is divided into three parts. After a peaceful stroll through the garden, guests enter the DiscOasis world, where they’re greeted by a soundtrack featuring voiceovers from Rodgers. “One of the things that Nile continually reminds us is that at the DiscOasis, the music never stops—so once guests reach this part of the experience they are immersed in music for the rest of the evening,” explained the team.

As attendees continue walking through the event, which runs from 5-10 p.m. every day but Monday, they encounter six different areas, each inspired by a different song as well as the theme of “What would a garden watered by music look like?” Each area features a disco-themed art installation as well as a live, costumed actor interacting with guests.

“Guests want experiences that bring people together in a way that feels safe—and in a way that feels pure-spirited and joyous,” said the team about what consumers want from events right now. “It’s about reconnecting people to the energy, inspiration and joy that the best live experiences are all about.”

At the 'Roller Disco,' guests can skate and dance with professional roller skaters and performers. The rink is operated by Ice-America, while the rest of the experience—including development, finance, production and operations—is handled by Constellation Immersive.

There are also retro arcade and lawn games, as well as a food and beverage area with a curated selection of food trucks. The idea is to pay tribute to the snack bar foods found in local roller rinks.

A portion of proceeds goes to the We Are Family Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Rodgers that promotes cultural diversity while nurturing and mentoring the vision, talents and ideas of young people. “The DiscOasis is about bringing people together and inspiring them through joy and individuality. Nile has been building the We Are Family Foundation for years, and its mission to empower youth to tell their stories in a way that fosters understanding and inclusivity is fully aligned with the spirit of the DiscOasis and disco music in general,” noted Nguyen and LaSalle.

The DiscOasis’s VIP night, held on July 21, featured a special performance from DJ Cassidy and drew guests like Adam Lambert (pictured), Tess Holliday and Will.I.Am. Nguyen and LaSalle say they hope to continue the experience in some form once this iteration wraps. “The DiscOasis has been imagined as a living, breathing pop-cultural entertainment event—so we expect to work with Nile and other artists to evolve the experience and bring it to other markets in the future.”
