SouthWest NY, the 8,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor restaurant from New York, opened on October 19 at the Dolphin Mall. As the name implies, the family-style restaurant features a menu of contemporary southwestern cuisine plus a terracotta and turquoise wood and tile interior resembling traditional southwestern, Latin, and Caribbean designs. Besides the 170-seat main dining area, SouthWest also has a private dining room for 20 to 25 people that can be used for special events. An outdoor cafe with patio seating for 75 has its own bar and a six-foot marble fountain, providing a key locale for alfresco events and people watching. The menu is a blend of Spanish, Mexican, and Native American influenced dishes such as oven-baked tostadas with chili and cheese, and mini barbecue pulled pork sandwiches for appetizers. Entrees include tamarind-glazed pork chop with boniato mash and bourbon creamed corn and mojo-marinated sirloin steak. The chef will be able to develop customized menus for groups. On Friday evenings, the restaurant plans to have live entertainment, from flamenco dancers to a guitarist. —Vanessa Goyanes
