For what occasion would 82-year-old Dick Van Dyke break into song and dance again? Backstage at the Geffen, the Geffen's annual fund-raising gala, enticed a sold-out crowd and an energetic performance from the Mary Poppins star. Monday night’s gala honored actress Annette Bening and Walt Disney president and C.E.O. Robert A. Iger and raised a record-breaking $575,000 for the Geffen’s Stage at Any Age education and outreach programs, which help expose underserved populations to theater.
A green carpet nodded to eco-consciousness, the theme of the event, which Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke co-chaired. The W Hotel’s Nine Thirty restaurant catered dinner, which guests washed down with desserts from a make-your-own sundae bar. The evening's festivities included a performance of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” by Van Dyke, a monologue from Romeo and Juliet by Bening, and a story by Andrews about her adventures with Carol Burnett.
