HBO Party for Helen Thomas Film References Her International Travels

Veteran reporter Helen Thomas was not in attendance Wednesday night for the HBO screening of the film Thank you, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House. But before the showing, some 300 guests—including members of the Washington press corps, such as Martha Raddatz of ABC News and Mary Ann Aakers of the Washington Post—toasted the 87-year-old Washington icon at the National Press Club, where Thomas served as the first female officer. (Thomas is in poor health, according to Yeas & Nays.)

As a nod to the reporter’s frequent trips overseas while covering presidential activities since the 1960s, the evening's menu offered a decidedly international range. In addition to the typical vegetable and cheese plates, the Press Club offered a sushi station and platters of Peking-style duck, samosas, and spring rolls. Waiters also circulated with asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, open-faced roast beef sandwiches, and mini-crab cakes.
