To celebrate the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s new season, colorful projections will be mapped on the exterior of the Walt Disney Concert Hall from September 27 to October 6. Curbed Los Angeles: “While designing the concert hall, [Frank] Gehry had imagined that L.A. Phil concerts would be projected live onto the building’s metallic exterior, giving Angelenos inside the concert hall and outside the chance to see the Philharmonic play.” https://bit.ly/2oZN1Be
Serena Williams, Tobey Maguire, and Salma Hayek will serve on the host committee for the inaugural Frieze L.A. contemporary art fair. The Hollywood Reporter: “The influential London-based art fair launches its first West Coast event in February. … Among the fair's nearly 70 exhibitors, about one-third are homegrown L.A. galleries, the rest headquartered in other major art cities." https://bit.ly/2N7jPqx
More than 230,000 people attended the L.A. County Fair over Labor Day weekend, marking the best opening the event has had in more than five years. Los Angeles Daily News: “Officials have made numerous changes to make the event more affordable for families. Fair officials also created a specific discounted day for Los Angeles County residents. Marketing agency Anthemic has named Randy Bookasta head of music and culture, where he’ll lead talent and culture partnerships. He’ll also serve as co-publisher and editorial director of Flood magazine.
Venue Buzz
James Beard Award-winning chef Jessica Largey’s highly anticipated Simone is opening September 20 in the Arts District. The restaurant will serve produce-driven, California-inspired fare in a stylish, “industrial-deco” space designed by Deirdre Doherty. For events, there’s the 25-seat bar dubbed Duello, plus a six-seat chef’s table and a 75-seat dining room filled with handmade brass chandeliers. Two private dining rooms seat 12 and 24 guests, respectively.

—Jimmy Kimmel, in a tweet about an upcoming fund-raiser hosted by Mayor Eric Garcetti that aims to raise $1 million for Democratic candidates in 10 states. Kimmel will M.C. and DJ Khaled will perform at the September 25 event at Avalon Hollywood.
On the Scene
We checked out the premiere of Hulu's space drama The First, which was appropriately held at the California Science Center underneath the Endeavor space shuttle. It's the first streaming service to ever do a premiere at the museum.

The Emmys, of course! The 70th anniversary of the award show takes place on Monday at the Microsoft Theater. Stay tuned for our roundup of the biggest parties—including the HBO after-party, which will be designed by Billy Butchkavitz for the 20th consecutive year and will have a "Garden of Eden" theme.
The entertainment industry events don't slow down after that, with Film Independent's L.A. Film Festival kicking off on September 20. Previously held in June, organizers moved the festival to September in order to get more attention for the lineup of artist-driven films.
