Hunger relief organization City Harvest held a tasteful--and tasty--benefit cocktail party at Light. Chaired by Kate Hemmerdinger-Goodman, one of the owners of Atlas, and Matt Blackman, the son of one of City Harvest's founders, the classy, fun event raised $20,000. Targeted to the nonprofit's Generation Harvest group of younger members, the event drew about 285 of the fresh-faced, upwardly mobile, Banana Republic-clad folks known as "young professionals."
City Harvest collects unused food that otherwise would be wasted, and distributes the food to more than 500 organizations that help hungry New Yorkers. The nonprofit can collect food from restaurants, caterers and other donors on a regularly scheduled basis, or when donors have leftover food from time to time. (So if you're expecting to have leftover food after your next event, consider contacting City Harvest.)
With its numerous connections in the food and restaurant businesses, City Harvest brought together a nice group of companies to donate food for the benefit: Light (which also donated the use of the space) provided tortilla chips and salsa, Dairyland and Coach Dairy Goat Farm provided cheeses, Petrossian provided French chocolates, Godiva provided gold ballotins and the Myriad Restaurant Group's Layla provided a sumptuous buffet with hummus, baba gannoujh, taramasalata and tadziki.
Tom Orlando Catering also supplied a buffet of focaccia, spring rolls, sliced turkey with cranberry chutney and spring crudites. And all of the leftovers went to City Harvest, of course.
