It was a jungle inside Roseland Ballroom, but without the humidity and bugs. For Twentieth Century Fox's Planet of the Apes premiere after-party, Party Planners West brought the movie's tropical setting indoors and completely transformed the vast venue into a cool jungle atmosphere with lush green vegetation everywhere. Tall, swampy-looking trees with palm plants and rocks set at the base of the trunks were placed around the room. Vines covered with moss draped from the branches to the ceiling, making guests feel like they were under a canopy of trees.
Buffet tables were decorated with tropical fruit and flower arrangements that included bananas, ginger flowers, pineapples, orchids, philodendron leaves and grapes. More stations were decorated with flaming iron cauldrons suspended on wood and stone frames, and other tables featured red printed fabric tents with tasseled edges draped onto tables and covered with more fruits and plants. Frost Lighting washed the room in blue, purple, red and green lights, which made the plants look even more lush and gave the decor a rich glow.
A tall ape statue with angular lanterns suspended from above stood in front of the dance floor and across from the DJ booth, which was backlit with a curtain of starry white lights. Tall wicker fencing and tiki torches stood next to the booth, which was surrounded by more plants and primitive decor. Given the huge amount of foliage inside the building, it's no surprise that the room sort of smelled like a jungle, too.
Tentation catered an exotic menu of tropical foods for the packed event, which drew a throng of celebrities on a July week that's light with other events in Manhattan. The gorgeous buffet tables offered baskets of plantain, taro and tomato chips with pineapple, tomato-apricot and kiwi-papaya salsas; swordfish, shrimp and veggie skewers; pecan crusted chicken fingers; and summer jalapeno wraps, among other dishes. Passed hors d'oeuvres included crabcakes with coconut lemongrass sauce, spicy duck wontons and yucca fritters with banana chutney. Mango and pineapple popsicles were the cool dessert item for the evening, similar to the lavender pops we saw at last week's Healing Gardens fragrance launch party.
