Hockey News Celebrates 60 Years

An ice sculpture, displays of goalie helmets and team jerseys, and screens playing a live hockey game helped created a hockey arena feel in the Fermenting Cellar for the publication's blow-out birthday party.

November 29, 2007
The Hockey News, a Transcontinental Media publication, would have preferred to hold its 60th anniversary bash at Maple Leaf Gardens, but the historic stadium skated into retirement in 1999. The Fermenting Cellar won the shootout for second choice, partly on the strength of its high ceilings and exposed wood and brick, somewhat reminiscent of an old hockey arena.

A large sculpted block of ice exhibiting the Hockey News logo added to the ice rink feel, as did displays of goalie helmets and team jerseys from a private collection, large screens from Visual FX showing a live hockey game, and food stations offering concession-stand fare. In addition, the Hockey News arranged to have the National Hockey League’s Hart and Conn Smythe trophies on display.

The food stations, principally from Amazing Food Service, served mini hamburgers, sausages, hot dogs, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, and french fries. Sushi was also available at a Japan Deli food station. As well, caterwaiters from DLE Staffing and Amazing Food Services passed hot hors d’oeuvres such as panko crusted chicken brochettes with ranch dip and mini potatoes with bacon, old cheddar, and sour cream.Yukon Event Furnishings supplied leather furniture for two bar areas, while Absolutely Flowers adorned the dinner tables with centrepieces containing anthuriums, small Toronto Maple Leafs towels, small replica hockey sticks, and hockey cards. Absolutely Flowers also provided floral arrangements in large urns placed throughout the venue. All Star Game Rentals contributed bubble and air hockey games, among other hockey-themed gaming equipment.

Door prizes given away throughout the evening included a Hockey Night in Canada jersey signed by broadcasters Don Cherry and Ron MacLean, a stick and jersey autographed by Wayne Gretzky, and a trip for two to Maui.
