5 New Restaurants in Cultural Institutions

1. The Tribune Tower unveiled new event spaces in June. On top of the historic structure, an observation deck with 360-degree views of the city skyline can accommodate receptions for 200. Inside, the McCormick Conference Center can host receptions for 250 and dinners for 50; Campbell Hall provides theater seating for 200. Food for Thought caters events held within the building.

2. In May, the Shedd Aquarium unveiled its renovated Oceanarium. Open since 1991, the 170,000-square-foot marine mammal pavilion overlooks Lake Michigan and houses dolphins, otters, and whales. After a nine-month renovation, the updated venue now offers a lakeside terrace, which seats 140. As before renovations, its interior can hold 1,000.

3. Two new restaurants—both offering fare from Jewell Events Catering—opened in September in the Civic Opera House. The Sarah and Peer Pederson Room, in a former bank on the building’s street level, serves items such as asparagus soup and hoisin-glazed salmon, and seats 74. On the building’s third-level dress circle, the 136-seat Florian Opera Bistro serves savory tarts and entrée salads.

4. In February 2009, the Chicago History Museum unveiled its remodeled North & Clark Café. Newly available for private events, the venue can accommodate 80 guests for sit-down dinners or host 120 for receptions. The daily menu reflects local culinary traditions with items such as the 1893 World’s Fair brownie; and Taste America caters all events in the café
