The year 2001 may be the start of the real millennium, but don't expect the same blowout celebrations as last New Year's Eve. New Yorkers are still a little hungover.
Eleven Madison Park, Alain Ducasse and Union Square Caf? won't be open at all on New Year's Eve, while Le Cirque 2000 and La Caravelle will have openly regular restaurant operations, but no private parties. Hotels such as the Waldorf=Astoria and the Grand Hyatt will have their usual New Year's Eve bashes, and other venues like the Metropolitan Pavilion are hosting parties for private groups or organizations. The Pierre has nothing planned. When Daniel didn't find a group for its private room, it put overflow reservations there. Roseland Ballroom was still working on booking a New Year's event yesterday.
After last year's excessive partying, things seem to have settled back to normal. "In general, I don't think you do a lot of parties on New Year's Eve," says Mike Warren, director of catering at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers (which is hosting a private party that night) and Pier Sixty (which has nothing). But the event industry still has plenty to celebrate. Warren says December has been a banner month, and other industry players we spoke with agree. "It's been a record year," says James Dale, the Grand Hyatt's director of catering. "People are having bigger and better parties."
