* INCOMING *
1. OSCAR CEREMONY UNDER WRAPS: The New York Times: "Breaking with recent precedent, Brian Grazer and Don Mischer, who are producing the Academy Awards ceremony for broadcast on ABC, have been assembling their show without engaging in a public conversation about it; they have been conspicuously silent on its themes, challenges and the presumably fresh approach they will take to the annual display of movie glamour and gratitude."
The Times does list some suggestions from Academy members: "nominees using smartphones to photograph themselves in the run-up to the show. Or bringing Oscar followers into the backstage hubbub in the press room, or to off-site parties like the annual Vanity Fair extravaganza, where stars who didn’t make the cut comment on those who did. Imagine the comic potential, and promotional punch, of a video snippet from the Oscar-eve rehearsal, when, say, a 60-year-old stand-in pretends to be Reese Witherspoon giving an award.”

2. FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS: Contributor Jim Shi: Aside from the lack of heating, a source of much griping, the recurring theme at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this season has been strong fall collections mirrored by inventive venues and show backdrops. The choice to show at large—and, in many cases, extra extra-large—sites has certainly been a noticeable trend this season, and, as a result, most designers are able to accommodate more guests than during the economic downturn. Here are some highlights, including Moncler’s efforts for Grenoble with, 180 professional athletes in a choreographed winter fairy tale dance in Central Park's Wollman Rink:

4. DIGITAL INVITES: From Orlando bureau chief Mitra Sorrells: Planners are using digital invitations for more than just inviting people to an event—they are gathering data on attendees, creating separate distribution channels, tracking check-ins, and integrating social media. Here's a look at the various services available from these digital invitation systems:

5. CROWDRISE'S NONSENSICAL MARKETING: The social fund-raising site is gaining notoriety for its quirky communication tactics including its tagline: "if you don't give back, no one will like you," and its note about donating that reads: "No one really wants to donate anonymously. We'll leak your anonymous donation so that you look like a full-on hero." Ad Age: "The company looks to strike a balance between the whimsical and the serious respect the charities deserve. As a result, Crowdrise doesn't touch the written copy on individual fundraising pages. The platform also doesn't try to be all things to all people, appealing to a younger-skewing target audience."

6. SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING: A Constant Contact survey found that social media tools are critical for small businesses and nonprofits planning events.
