Wolf Gordon by the Getty's Group curtained off its booth, and guests stood in line to enter the mysterious installation. With a "Secret Society of Benevolence" theme, the space had a back wall made of black envelopes sealed with golden hearts. Guests could take the envelopes off the wall, and instructions inside bid them to perform kind tasks, such as offering compliments to fellow partygoers. A large-scale graphic design was slowly revealed as guests took more envelopes.

2013 Holiday Party Trends: In-Office and At-Home Events Are More Popular
2013 Holiday Party Trends: In-Office and At-Home Events Are More Popular
Some methods of saving money that came about during the recession are likely to stick around, including the move toward more intimate, low-key events. While 64 percent of respondents in last year’s holiday survey said their party was held at a bar, restaurant, or event space, almost 37 percent of survey-takers reported that their festivities took place at the office or at the home of a boss or colleague. And while parties at low- to no-cost venues may have initially been an idea born out of tight budgets, it’s a trend that’s continuing for different reasons. “Starting last year, I saw more companies hosting the event at the C.E.O.’s home, with made-to-order food stations set up throughout the space,” Gorjestani says. “Companies are distributing what they spend their money on differently. Inviting employees into your home is a really nice touch because it adds such a thoughtful, personal aspect to the event.” As for in-office parties, new  holiday party decor collections from Revelry House, MarthaCelebrations for J.C. Penney, and Minted make it easier than ever to make the meeting room look festive. Pictured: Stationery e-tailer Minted’s new holiday party decor collections start from $65, and include customizable banners, napkins, signage, and more.

Transfernation

Transfernation, an app created by New York University seniors Samir Goel and Hannah Dehradunwala in 2013, aims to simplify the donation of leftover food from meetings and events. The "Uber for food rescue" app allows organizations with food to donate and volunteers who transport it to track the process. The app, which has donated more than 10,000 pounds of food since its launch, has coordinated food pickups from Indeed, Cater2.me, and Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting in September.

Problem: Drawing a Crowd in Winter

In February, while Chicago was in the throes of winter, event space Hub Studio Loft hosted a grand opening party that created a summery environment capable of inspiring guests to venture out in the cold. A section of the event space included a tiki bar offering up "Puka Punch,” which guests sipped amid miniature palm trees, umbrellas, and Astroturf for mind-over-matter warmth. Flowers that evoked a tropical climate sat upon tabletops covered with sand and seashells.
