R23 was a part of the downtown renaissance before there was much of a renaissance. The owners recently took over the adjoining gallery space to double the restaurant's size and add two private dining areas. Each room holds 25, and the new space holds 60 total; the entire restaurant now holds 120. The owners also added a sake bar and an updated sake and wine program, and new dishes have been added to the menu. R23 has exposed-redbrick walls lined with large Gauguin-inspired paintings by Japanese artist Shiho Amano, Frank Gehry-designed chairs, and kiln-fired ceramic platters as functional art behind the sushi bar.
