1. FASHIONABLE PARTIER: Fashion designer Alexander Wang, the new creative director of Balenciaga, is known for throwing a great party. New York magazine compiled a timeline of his most talked-about events including one at a Mobil Gas Station where guests grabbed "free candy, soda, beer—and Veuve Clicquot—from the convenience store" and another where staff wore masks that looked like former presidents. http://nym.ag/XSkNGq
2. MARKETING HOLOCAUST MUSEUM: For its 20th anniversary, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum hired Chicago-based experiential marketing firm agencyEA to craft an advertising campaign and plan one-day events in Boca Raton, Fla., Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. New York Times: "Holocaust survivors will speak at the events, where visitors also can bring family artifacts from the era to be examined by the museum curatorial staff. Each stop also will include a tribute ceremony for both local survivors and World War II veterans who helped liberate concentration camps." http://nyti.ms/XLIvEo
3. INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY WINDOWS: Vanity Fair: "From New York’s celebration of the American Jazz Age and its creative titans like Walt Disney to England’s cheering for chinoiserie and Dickensian steam trains, this year’s holiday windows were surprisingly academic and reference-filled. We sent photographers to capture the best department-store displays in the cities of London, Paris, Tokyo, and New York." Here's the slide show: http://vnty.fr/YV1bCZ
And here's BizBash editor at large Ted Kruckel's take on New York's windows: http://bit.ly/UB7umu
4. OSCAR PREVIEW: Host Seth MacFarlane spoke to Rolling Stone about his plans for the February 24 ceremony: "It's about finding that balance between doing what I do but acknowledging that this is the Academy Awards, not the roast of Donald Trump. It's walking that line between old-fashioned showmanship and allowing it to be contemporary with a little bit of bite. ... There's a moment on Family Guy that's just Gene Kelly dancing with Stewie—that's what we have to achieve, a dance between the traditional and the new." http://rol.st/XNyeaH
5. INDIE HOST: Comedian Andy Samberg will host the Film Independent Spirit awards February 23. Los Angeles Times: "Samberg has some big shoes to fill, as [actor Seth] Rogen earned rave reviews as the host of this year's show. The Spirit awards, which are held in a tent on the Santa Monica beach, are known for their laid-back vibe—and Rogen capitalized on that, frequently using expletives and going after top entertainment personalities." http://lat.ms/T88wsK
6. SUPER HEAD START: Advertisers are announcing their plans to run spots during Super Bowl XLVII, disclosures that normally would happen after the holidays. New York Times: "The increasing interest among consumers in discussing and sharing Super Bowl spots on Web sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is encouraging sponsors to speak up sooner. Sponsors say they believe the additional publicity stimulates not only word of mouth, but also viewing of the commercials when they finally run in the game." http://nyti.ms/SQK2Ez
7. CELEBRATING SOY SAUCE: Here's one way to celebrate a corporate anniversary: Hire an Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker to make a movie about you. Director Lucy Walker's film Make Haste Slowly, about the history of soy sauce company Kikkoman, will premiere online December 23. Huffington Post: "Although the historical aspect seems like interesting enough documentary fodder, the trailer is riddled with promotional remarks ("It was a bold, bold experiment which proved to be very successful") and close-up shots of the company's sleek bottles." http://huff.to/X6eIkB
