Held in early May, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Mission Creek Gala was designed by Gillian Valentine with the goal of highlighting four distinct habitats of the country: the Santa Barbara channel, the coastal wetlands, the oak woodlands, and the California wildflowers on Figueroa Mountain. Designers used decor from the museum to create the different components. The coastal habitat had an elegant under-the-sea theme, with light, silver tableware and small tide pools filled with starfish, shells, and other ocean-inspired elements.

The same year, HBO’s annual post-Emmys party had a water theme. Designer Billy Butchkavitz used a color palette with seven shades of blue, and a 105-foot-long water lounge flowed from the dining pavilion to the formal entrance of the event space. Rippling water-patterned custom carpet covered the party space, and centerpieces were hand-blown glass pedestal bowls with floating dinnerplate dahlias, creating the look of a tabletop water garden.

At luxury watchmaking convention Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2014, IWC Schaffhausen chose a water theme. Aiming to celebrate its Aquatimer collection, the trade show booth was meant to evoke the feeling of diving into a wave. Replica hammerhead sharks hung from the ceiling, surrounding a central chandelier comprising 2,400 individually strung Plexi 'bubbles' that hung nearly 30 feet down. Two cross projectors cast deep sea images both vertically and horizontally onto two large curved screens, while a circular bar in the middle of the space housed an information desk and a bar that served cocktails and even caviar.

Following the Emmys, HBO hosted its annual bash at the Pacific Design Center’s fountain plaza. Working with HBO’s Cindy Tenner, longtime collaborator Billy Butchkavitz again designed the event. (It was Butchkavitz’s 18th consecutive HBO Emmy party.) The theme for this year’s production-heavy party was water, with a color palette done in seven shades of blue.

A 105-foot-long water lounge flowed from the dining pavilion to the formal entrance of the event space. Photographer Gabor Ekecs created a dramatic photo collage to serve as a backdrop for the 150-foot-long HBO press line. A 24-foot-high by 16-foot-diameter cascading fountain sculpture was the centerpiece of the party, centrally displayed within the 120- by 100-foot dining pavilion. Rippling water-patterned custom carpet covered the 50,000 square feet of party space. Twenty-five-foot-high perimeter walls enclosed and defined the event space, and were decorated with flowing draperies of two-tone metallic jacquard and blue metallic columns.

As part of last year’s Canada 150 celebrations, and to celebrate British Columbia’s annual salmon migration, Christie Digital used projection mapping to transform Vancouver’s Cambie Street Bridge into a virtual ocean. Eight projectors were used to create a colorful, cinematic show, which ran on a daily basis from June to early fall.

For the Allie Awards in Atlanta in March 2016, themed environments channeled earth, water, and fire. Dinner took place in the water-inspired space which had deep blue lighting and blue rentals designed to make guests feel as though they were submerged in ocean waters. Active Production and Design built a custom stage set for the space.
