1. Luminato
#1 Art & Design Event The 10-day celebration features street art and free outdoor events, ticketed concerts, and gallery shows. Artists from more than 40 countries attend, including, in 2013, Joni Mitchell, who sang at her 70th birthday tribute concert. Next: June 6-15, 2014

2. Doors Open Toronto
#3 Art & Design Event (up from #4) Doors Open Toronto marks its 15th anniversary in 2014, sponsored again by Great Gulf. The event offers rare access to more than 150 architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings. Next: May 24-25, 2014

3. Art Toronto
#4 Art & Design Event Canada’s largest contemporary art fair, Art Toronto features more than 110 galleries from 13 countries in 2013. It also added the Toronto Life Next Lounge in which collectors, curators, and artists could relax or join discussions hosted by C magazine. Next: October 25-28, 2013

4. Contact Photography Festival
#5 Art & Design Event The theme of the monthlong photography festival in 2013 was “Field of Vision,” with exhibitions, installations, and educational events taking place across the city. Next: May 1-31, 2014

5. IIDEX
#6 Art & Design Event (new to the list) Canada’s largest design and architecture gathering unites more than 15,000 people under one roof for a four-day conference and two-day exposition. The 2014 event moves to December and has a new location: the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Next: December 3-4, 2014
