As press lined the red carpet outside Skylight minutes before party time, inside, event staffers were putting the finishing touches on People en Español’s “50 Mas Bellos” celebration. Skylight’s vaulted ceilings and expansive hall were filled with shades of blue, palm trees, and white and grey suede and leather couches to accommodate the 800 guests. “We were trying to go with an industrial chic look that captured the feel of being in the Caribbean,” said Carolyn Chauncey, event marketing director for People en Español and Teen People, who produced the event. “We wanted everyone to feel like they were hanging out at the Shore Club [in Miami] on a beautiful day.”
To channel “every hue of the ocean,” as Chauncey wanted, Bentley Meeker had cloud images projected on the walls, alongside sky blue and aqua paisley patterns, while Derrick Roberts Productions projected B-roll footage of the Mas Bellos celebrities taken during their photo shoots for the magazine. Scenes of both Evas (Longoria and Mendes, that is) and Jennifer Lopez giggling and smirking for the camera danced on the walls, providing additional eye candy for guests.
XA, the Experiential Agency brought in steel highboy tables peppered with glittering candles and arranged white and silver couches, each decorated with pillows bearing the logos of the event sponsors—Maybelline, Johnnie Walker, Vavoom, and American Airlines. The Catering Company provided tapas and dim sum with Latin and Asian influences for the celeb-heavy crowd to nibble on, including skewers of grilled beef, chicken, and salmon, as well as pulled pork pressed sandwiches.
To take advantage of the spring weather, Chauncey set up an open-air cabana, complete with palm trees, adjacent to the main room. Party sponsor Vavoom provided a chocolate fountain and strawberries for dipping in the cabana, where there was also a bar and several flat-screen TVs.
Guests were lured to the dance floor during the last hour of the party by radio station Hot 97’s DJ Enuff, who played Latin pop, salsa, and merengue. Those in attendance included Enrique Iglesias, Michelle Rodriquez, and hairstylist Oribe.
