Hollywood is known for its early risers, who flood the Runyon Canyon trails and local Starbucks as the sun comes up. But this day each year starts especially early: Today, more than 400 members of the international media attended the 5:38 a.m. PST press conference to hear the nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards. Nominations for 10 of the 24 Oscar categories—which unsurprisingly recognized movies like The Social Network, Black Swan, and The King's Speech—were announced live by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak and Oscar winner Mo'Nique.
Mo'Nique and Sherak made the announcements on a stage at the academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills backed by a video screen, which flashed with the names and photos of the nominees as each was announced. Giant representations of Oscar statuettes flanked the stage amid the hail of flashbulbs.
After the announcement, lists of nominations in all categories were distributed to the media in attendance and online. The Oscars will be presented on February 27 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised in more than 200 countries.
