* INCOMING *

1. SOCIAL MARKETING:
 Whether or not a social media manager can be called a marketer, and vice versa, has been up for debate for quite some time now. To dig deeper, AdWeek talks to young social-media types and veterans in the digital marketing space. AdWeek: “'People are struggling to define the role,’ says MKG’s [Dave] Brown. ‘No one is sure what to call us. No one is sure what to pay us...'" http://bit.ly/QzVccW

2. MARKETING MONEY-MAKERS:
 AdAge looks at who controls the marketing budgets at 21 major brands. "'In an environment where the chief marketing officer is charged with everything from global expansion to customer research and agency relations (not to mention his or her department's ROI) the day-to-day management of those multimillion-dollar ad outlays is often handled a level or two down." http://bit.ly/P7EkMG

3. MARKET PUSH:
 Brands, including BET for its October 6 Hip-Hop Awards show, are starting to use push notifications—opt-in text messages—on mobile apps to increase brand messaging. AdWeek: "Brands can use push notifications to target users by location down to the street level as well as by their app users’ demonstrated interests. While the notion might seem invasive on its face, marketers are counting on digital natives and older tech-savvy consumers growing comfortable with such tactics as smartphones become more pervasive and users’ expectations change." http://bit.ly/S6OmMg

4. MEDIA SUMMIT:
 Mashable announced its one-day Mashable Media Summit on November 2 in New York. The conference will explore how new technologies are redefining media and marketing with a lineup that includes experts from Facebook, Tumblr, Hearst, LinkedIn, and PBS Digital Studio. http://on.mash.to/QaiD08
