In the spirit of Earth Day, solar-powered radio station 92.5 the River hosted a free, lunchtime concert on the Rose Kennedy Greenway on April 22. The lineup consisted of Martha's Vineyard-based jam band Entrain, BoDeans, and Colin Hay. The three-hour concert drew 1,000 attendees for an outdoor show underscored by sunny spring weather.
The goal was to" bring Bostonians together to enjoy everything that’s great about the city on Earth Day, and to promote sustainability," said Hisham Fayed, the station's director of marketing and promotions. The concert, a celebration that launched last year on Earth Day's 40th anniversary, also serves as a marketing tool for the River.
The family-friendly event had a laid-back vibe, with a kids' area hosted by the New England Aquarium, space for playing hula hoop on the lawn, and parents dancing with their kids as the bands each played sets onstage.
Green elements included recycling bins along the Greenway and about 20 vendor booths from eco-conscious companies, including Stonyfield organic yogurt, Fuze drinks, Honest Tea, Mass Audubon Society, and Save That Stuff. These event sponsors handed out samples and information on green living; Xfinity reps handed out branded frisbees that guests could toss on the Greenway.
